We got on the road at 9 AM, and drove to De Smet to visit the Laura Ingalls Wilder Homestead. They had the two types of homes (dugout - made of dirt in the side of a hill, and shanty - made of wood). It had a 30' lookout tower, a barn with a new calf pregnant cow with lots of kittens running around. It had 'Ma's house' with a manual sewing machine & manual air pumped organ. We drove on a covered wagon to a single room school house (Peter & EmmaLee drove the mules). Each place, they had someone talking about life back then. The schoolhouse was great. The final barn had a bunch of different inventions (rope maker, corn husk kernal remover, and several others). It really brought us back to life in the 1800's. We had a great time there for several hours.
We then drove to Mitchell, SD, home of the famous Corn Palace, a palace made of different colored corn cobs, made differently since the early 1900's.
We finally made it to Interior SD at about 8:30 PM, to the Badlands White River KOA campsite, just South of the Badlands National Park. Total mileage today was 400 miles. We'll be staying here for 2 nights, while we tour the Badlands.

As a former voracious reader of all the LIW books and television show, I would LOVE to see this someday! Thank you for sharing your experience. Was there anyone there playing the fiddle like "Pa" use to? That was always one of my favorite parts/scenes.
